About the Artist

Jonathan W. Mendez (he/him) is an emerging euphonium artist based in Old Bridge, NJ, renowned for his mastery in doubling on multiple instruments.

Jonathan joined the three-time National Champion Atlantic Brass Band in 2022 and currently serves as the ensemble’s second baritone. He is an active freelancer and has performed with the Princeton Brass Band, the Lancaster Brass Band, the Chesapeake Brass Band, the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra, and is a substitute player for the United States Air Force Band. Jonathan has performed internationally, including the International Tuba Euphonium Conference, the International Euphonium Tuba Festival, and the International Women’s Brass Conference, and can be heard performing in Don’t Look Down - #JustAddDrumCorps Edition by actress and musician, Janina Gavankar.

Jonathan holds a Master of Music in Euphonium Performance from Duquesne University, where he studied with international tuba soloist, Dr. James Gourlay of the River City Brass, and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Music from Allegheny College, where he studied with Dr. Janyl Jumadinova of the Department of Computer and Information Science and Dr. Ronald Stitt of the Erie Philharmonic. Jonathan was also mentored by Dr. Lowell Hepler of the Erie Philharmonic and James Nova of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Recent Performances

North American Brass Band Championships

Jonathan performed on tenor horn with the three-time National Champion Atlantic Brass Band at the North American Brass Band Championships. The Atlantic Brass Band received 1st place in the category of Own Choice for their performance of Saints Triumphant by Philip Wilby.

WGI Indoor Percussion

Jonathan was part of the educational team that designed Old Bridge High School’s Indoor Percussion program titled: What’s This? Old Bridge Percussion received 1st place at the Mid-Atlantic Percussion Society Finals and competed in WGI Percussion Scholastic World Finals.

Performer

Jonathan has performed in a variety of setting including brass bands, wind bands, orchestras, jazz bands, musicals, church services, chamber ensembles, jazz combos, marching bands and music videos. He is currently available to be booked on euphonium, baritone, trombone, tenor horn, tuba and marching percussion.

Lessons

Jonathan has mentored people at different points in their playing careers. His students have had success in personal musical achievement goals, drum corps training, district competitions and university auditions. He demonstrates world class techniques with an emphasis on the fundamentals.

Clinician & Consultant

Jonathan has designed, choreographed and educated some of the best music programs in the state of NJ. These programs have taken home both state and national championship titles. Judges often complement the technique, maturity and achievement of the groups he has worked with.
